appreciation of poetry

Posted 2011. 2. 7. 02:13
Every day I receive one poem delivered to my e-mail inbox from The Writer's Almanac. On most days, I delete these messages unread since poems baffle me to frustration, but I still bear with the Writer's Almanac e-mails because they come with juicy, extraordinary stories of some used-to-be ordinary people. Today, however, while killing some time between meetings, I read this poem and reread it and I liked it.

Modern Declaration

by Edna St. Vincent Millay

I, having loved ever since I was a child a few things, never
        having wavered
In these affections; never through shyness in the houses of the
        rich or in the presence of clergymen having denied these
        loves;
Never when worked upon by cynics like chiropractors having
        grunted or clicked a vertebra to the discredit of these
        loves;
Never when anxious to land a job having diminished them by
        a conniving smile; or when befuddled by drink
Jeered at them through heartache or lazily fondled the fingers
        of their alert enemies; declare

That I shall love you always.
No matter what party is in power;
No matter what temporarily expedient combination of allied
        interest wins the war;
Shall love you always.

Love how this piece has its form and content so in sync.

사랑할 때 목숨을 걸어 그 한 사람으로 듬뿍해져버리는. just like what happens to me when i fall in love.

p.s. This post should be titled "appreciation of a poem," not so much "poetry" but whatever.
