A thought on June 25

Probably (?) beginning next week, I will, en finalement, start reading One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I did some wiki reading on the subway this morning, and learned that the novel was set against a historical backdrop of Thousand Days' War that took place in Colombia 1899-1902. (a very tumultuous and humiliating period for Korea too) Tapped further into the link and the war is described as "a civil armed conflict in the newly created Republic of Colombia between the Conservative Party, the Liberal Party and its radical factions." I immediately emphasized at the word of "civil conflict" as Korean history is - throughout the past and fully through the present and as of now - filled with fights and conflicts between the citizens or people of our own kind. Maybe all these problems are universal. Oh wells. As for us Korea, just because of where we are on the world map, we get to deal with extra issues. Incidentally or coincidentally, today is June 25th; the official start date of the Korean War 63 years ago. But the Korean peninsula had already been divided when or shortly after the Japanese lost their war and left us in 1945. All those superpowers to blame but in the end of course it's us ourselves, it's us who are so used to finding something/someone to blame at hand. Also granted that a civil conflict is not an easy concept to define, something that cannot of course be limited as an affair of one country. In relationships beyond one, do we have any pertinence in life anyway.
